Colleen K. Mattrey
Biography
Colleen Mattrey joined Donohue Brown Smyth in August of 2026 as Senior Counsel. Ms. Mattrey concentrates her practice on the defense of medical malpractice and healthcare liability claims. With more than two decades of legal experience, she represents hospitals, physicians, nurses, chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals in complex litigation matters, as well as professional discipline proceedings before the New York State Office of Professional Medical Conduct and the New York State Education Department. Before relocating to Chicago, Ms. Mattrey also served as outside general counsel for several large practice groups in New York advising them on compliance and risk management strategies.
With more than 20 years of legal experience, Ms. Mattrey is a seasoned trial attorney who has successfully represented clients in courts throughout New York State. Her extensive litigation experience includes defending high-exposure medical malpractice claims and achieving favorable outcomes at trial.
Ms. Mattrey has been recognized by Super Lawyers® in the area of Medical Malpractice Defense every year since 2013 and was named to the WNY Legal Elite in 2016. In addition to her litigation practice, she is a frequent speaker on risk management, healthcare liability, and litigation issues, presenting to hospitals, medical practices, and healthcare organizations throughout Western New York.
Since 2014, Ms. Mattrey has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University at Buffalo School of Law, where she teaches Trial Technique and helps prepare the next generation of trial lawyers.
Ms. Mattrey earned her J.D. from the University at Buffalo School of Law in 2004. She is admitted to practice before all New York State courts, the United States District Court for the Western District of New York, and the State of Illinois.
